Have you ever thought: WOW, this child understands some things better than some adults! I have, many times. And this Sunday, I thought so again. I was at the rally at the DTW airport, protesting Trump’s changes to our nation’s immigration system, when I saw this boy sitting at the curb holding up his sign. As his father proudly told me, the child had come up with the message all by himself and had made the sign himself. The boy’s simple yet profound message read “Don’t make people sad. Be nice to everyone.” I was impressed. This boy had come up with a thoughtful message of love and inclusiveness, of mutual respect and humility. At the same time, he had exposed Trump’s divisive message of fear, hate, and outright Islamophobia as wrong and hurtful. The USA has always been a nation of immigrants and a haven of religious freedom, with the separation of church and state enshrined in her constitution. Thus, when Trump targeted an entire religion, this boy captured the spirit of what REALLY makes America great, by displaying his beautiful message on a cold January day, spending his Sunday afternoon standing up for what he believes to be right. People like him make America great.
